VIN decoder & Lookup

Check the VIN. What is a VIN code and how to check it?

Each car has its own history, its own features and distinctive characteristics that are unique to it. All the differences of the car are fraught with VIN (Vin) – a code that means nothing more than an individual car number. The VIN - code gives an excellent opportunity to find out the exact date of the car's release, as well as the number of owners and everything that happened to this car.

So, let's first analyze what is a VIN code or an identification number. The VIN code or identification number is a combination of symbols, both alphanumeric and numeric, that are assigned to the car so that the car can be identified later. Assigning an individual identification number to a car is a mandatory procedure.

The VIN code of the car consists of seventeen characters and has the following designations: VIS, as well as WMI and VDS. These designations located at the beginning of the VIN code mean nothing more than the manufacturer's identification number of the international standard. This number helps to identify the manufacturer who produced the car. These designations consist either only of letters or in combination with numbers.

The first 2 signs of WMI use letters and numbers, which, in accordance with ISO 3780, are controlled by the international agency "SAE", which works under the guidance of ISO and assigns them to the country.

Geographical area means the first sign, it can be either a number or a letter, for example, S - Z means Europe, J - R means Asia, and A - H means Africa. But, for example, such numbers as 1-5 means North America, 8-9-0 means South America and 6-7 means Oceania Countries.

The second sign can also be both a letter and a number and means a certain country in the geographical area. Also, countries can use a couple of signs to indicate if necessary. The combination of both the first and second characters can give a guarantee for the recognition of the country. For example, WA - WZ or W0 - W9 is Germany, 10 - 19 or 1A - 1Z is the United States of America, Z - ZW is Mexico and Canada is 2A - 2W.
